DIY Fire Pit

After a year of wanting a fire pit I am happy to say we finally have one. Instead of buying one at Lowe's we decided to make our own. The first step was picking out the brick. We decided on this one:


Next we measured out the circle with spray paint and then dug a small hole.


We started with two rows of bricks but decided three looked much better. 
Each brick was $1.78 at Lowe's. 


We then went to a local landscaping business and purchased tiny stones to fill the bottom. The stones were only .60!


I couldn't resist posting this pic of our cute onlookers :)

 And that's it! Just fill it with wood. . .


And we have a fire pit! 


It really is a nice addition to our backyard and this fire pit was cheaper than the one we had our eye on! I would call that a win!

Love this!!! Found it through Pinterest. It seems so easy to create. I've been wanting to build a fire pit for sometime now. I think this is has just sealed the deal for me. Thanks so much for sharing.

Does grass grow through the stones?

Kristie we haven't had a problem with the grass growing through the stones. We dug down a bit, maybe that's why we haven't had a problem.

In time you will have issues with grass growing through the rock, just use some round up several times a year and this will solve that problem, now the fire pit shown in the initial picture on Homestead Survival with a second ring a few feet outside the main fire pit to contain the gravel is very nice to look at but not very safe in methodology, the second ring around the outside is a trip hazard in the dark and could cause someone to trip and fall right into the fire so I would not recommend any type of raised retainer for the stone unless you make it ten to fifteen feet or more larger than the actual fire ring so if someone does trip hopefully they recover before getting to the fire.

Do you realize you have the bricks upside down. The lip on the back is supposed to be on the bottom side to help with spacing and to keep the brick from moving if used on a retaining wall.

It looks very nice and cozy. We put ours on a metal platform on our patio. It has to be a ten foot radius away from our house and our trees.

We went to our local landscaping company and purchased white tiny stones. We got enough to cover the entire bottom.

This is so cute. I'd definitely going to give it a try. What is the size (diameter) of the fire pit and did you use any cement to hold the stone together or just stack them?

Perhaps having the lip up helps if you are using a grate for cooking on or grilling, it would prevent the grate from sliding.

Do you ever have any problems with the side stones cracking due to heat? The reason I ask is that most firepits are lined with either 1/2" to 1" stell or by fire-proof brick/rock/liner?

We just simply stacked the bricks. We've never had an issue with the bricks cracking or moving and it's 2 years old.

Did you remove the lip from any of the bricks, so they could be stacked flush together, without creating a tiered wall, like they are designed to be stacked? Or did you just stack on top of the lip, and end up with the bricks being slightly slanted?

I have the same ones as well. I imagine they either removed the lip from some of the bricks, so they could be stacked flush together. Or they just stacked them right on top of the lip, and so the bricks are not actually level and probably slightly slant downwards.

Did you use brick that is especially equipped for fire? Typically if you don’t it will eventually crack. Also by using the rocks , does it make it difficult to get the ashes out without scooping rocks out with the ashes? Thanks

Waldomountainman, it would be better to use something otherthan round-up . They've found that it causes cancer. So try and get something else.
